Director Michael Curtiz (Casablanca) shows a sure hand with spectacle, especially in the climactic scene depicting a massive dam explosion. The spectacle is intensified by the same three-strip Technicolor process that helped make the Adventures of Robin Hood and the Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex (both also directed by Curtiz) so memorable. The fine supporting cast includes Margaret Lindsay, Tim Holt, Sidney Toler, George Gabby Hayes and Claude Raines as de Havilland's implacable father.
