    Lesson 1
The late John Hartford was one of America's most beloved and influential proponents of traditional music. A skilled, thoughtful and knowledgeable player, John had many unusual theories and a treasure-trove of songs, ideas and techniques that he enthusiastically shares here with learning banjo pickers.

This is the first of two highly-packed lessons that John Hartford recorded for Homespun. Working with songs taken from his vast repertoire, he demonstrates rolls and licks along with important advice about getting good tone ("finding the sweet spot"), phrasing, accenting, using picks, playing backup and lots more. John reveals his personal tricks for playing fast (using hammers and pulls, triplets and "ghost" notes), and illustrates how he "plays the words" to a song to give his banjo solo depth and meaning.

The tunes John covers on this DVD include Cumberland Gap, Old Time River Man, Cripple Creek, and his best-known hit song, Gentle On My Mind. With Chris Sharp backing him up on fiddle and guitar, john's unique and enjoyable lesson provides invaluable insights into his trademark banjo sound.

    Lesson 2
On this second lesson in his unique banjo series, John Hartford once again passes on numerous ideas for the learning player. You'll add color and excitement to your banjo solos with John's trademark chromatic scales, the famous ear-catching runs of his "slide-whistle" lick and his "fiddle style" melodic playing, which you will learn to play anywhere on the fingerboard. Sally Goodin and Old Time River Man provide the perfect examples for these dynamic techniques.

John's invaluable advice covers everything from using a metronome and a tape recorder for your practice sessions to detailed instruction on dancing while playing the banjo (complete with his "footlature" notation system). He details licks based on diminished augmented chords, plus banjo back up patterns, hot to create "accidental counterpoint" and a demonstration of how he writes his original breakdowns for banjo.

You'll learn to play spectacular tunes such as Leather Britches (backup), Goin' Back to Dixie, Cackling Hen, Annual Waltz, Your Tax Dollars at Work, Lorena, Boogie, and Foggy Mountain Landscape.

"Hartford was a beacon of musical integrity and a whimsical spirit whose childlike enthusiasm for music and profound understanding of it nurtured the talents of others." - The Tennessean
