  This newly performance of Bach's materpiece was recorded live at the Romanesque church in Alpirsbach. The St. Matthew Passion, acknowledged to be the culmination of Bach's writing for the church, was first performed at St Thomas', Leipzig, on Good Friday in 1729. It is considered to be the greates work of its kind ever written, a deeply moving combination of joy and grief which attains the utmost heights of expressiveness.
  
  In this acclaimed performance, Enoch zu Guttenberg conducts the Neubeuern Choral Society and the Minich Bach Collegium. Guttenberg founded the Neubeuern Choral Society in 1967 ans within a few years won international acclaim with his unique Bavarian choir. Guttenberg's main repertoire is drawn from the great oratorios from Bach to Stravinsky.
